Frequently asked questions
Which barcode format should I use?
Code 128 is the most versatile for general text and numbers. Use EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, ITF-14 for shipping cartons, and Data Matrix or PDF417 for 2D codes.
Why won't my value generate?
Some formats require a specific length or character set — EAN-13 needs 12–13 digits and UPC-A needs 11–12 digits, for example. Check the format's requirements and try again.
Are the barcodes free to use?
Yes — free for personal and commercial use. Note that selling retail products may require an officially registered number, such as a GS1 UPC.
